Try NoMachine
Of course this is not sponsored. Today I was wondering if there is a way for me to access my personal laptop's screen from my work laptop. For the obvious weight reason, I do not want to carry everywhere both laptops in my backpack. In many cases, I just want my personal laptop to be an always on laptop that I can access remotely through internet. SSH works great for many cases, but sometimes I need a graphical access e.g. to view emails on Betterbird, or just simply to browse the web. At first, I was directed to X2Go, which from a simple Google search is said to be the successor of FreeNX (which from another Google search is said to be faster than VNC and RDP). Don't quote me on this. X2Go is not that easy to set up, at least for me. I use custom i3 desktop that requries me to tweak a few config, but it's not that much really. And then, after it's kind of usable, I noticed that Alacritty was not working. It said something about XIQueryVersion BadValue error. Of course, I can use another terminal emulator, but somehow, it annoys me if I can't run anything I want. And then, I tried NoMachine, it works great, and also seems to be faster. Perhaps I am not that really technical of a user. The only thing I have to configure with NoMachine is to unset `WAYLAND_DISPLAY` in my `.xsession` so I can launch Alacritty (NoMachine sets it to "no" and Alacritty seems to think I'm on Wayland). Extra tips: I am accessing from a Windows client on my work laptop, and it uses a HiDPI display. I have to set a Compatibility option for VcXSrv (in case of X2Go) and the NoMachine executable to let them handle scaling. Otherwise, everything will look blurry due to Windows' scaling settings.Created: 2025-03-01 09:51:28, Updated: 2025-03-01 09:51:28, ID: ba0f538c-a4ca-4047-83f6-93816a5baac9
